Sciences Po has striked again!! I am constantly asking myself why I am taking classes right now. Oh yeah, cuz I’m studying abroad. Why couldn’t I have taken wine tasting or a French foods class? What happened to those classes where they take you to museums and sites around the city? Oh yeah, I enrolled in a French university. They care about going to their museums and sights just about as much as I want to go see the Capitol building and Washington monument for the thousandth time.. Well actually, if it got me out of class…
So I just found out the other day that despite having no exams (!!) my French professor is hauling us in after classes have ended (starting to sound like an exam to me…) to perform exposés and oral interviews. BAH! I had forgotten why I hate taking foreign language classes. Why am I so bad at French? I now have two weeks to prepare to give an unscripted 15 minute presentation to my class. Okay, whatever, I’ll just pick an easy and interesting topic. Just kidding! Rules of the exposé: We must keep to level 1 vocabulary BUT the topic has to be about a social issue occurring in the world today. Once again, f#!% me, how the hell am I supposed to use the nothingness he taught me all semester to talk about a social issue for 15 minutes!! Then we have to come in the next day for a one-on-one oral interview with him! F#!%!!!!!
Oh, and we had our third test of the semester on Thursday. For our tests, we have to write an essay in French and it’s graded on use of vocabulary and whatever else we’ve learned lately, coherence, and orthographie/grammaire/syntaxe. Well our lovely professor gives no one points for the orthographie/grammaire/syntaxe part. His reasoning? Oh, well we are simply French level 1 students, there is no way we could use authentic grammar and syntax at this point in our knowledge… yeah, I hate this French class.
Wish me luck! xoxo.
