So clearly my post Mardi Gras diet is over…
Actually I’m feeling pretty great and have been sticking with the smoothies for breakfast for a couple of weeks now. But this morning my brother is in town (more news on that to come) and the occasion called for something a bit more fun.
There is nothing worse than a starved girl waiting in line for brunch so I figured on the way we could stop by Blue Dot and taste a few donuts. This bakery is New Orleans famous and recently opened a new location right down the road from my place. It’s been calling my name every time I drive past.
I’ve stopped by once before but I arrived too late. They had already closed up shop. Even when we got in this morning around 10 am, it was clear the selection had been picked over and we were left with just a few options. Probably for the best, because with a whole case of options I would’ve run into the paralyzing problem of too many choices.
We settled on three flavors:
Meet Mr. Peanut Butter Banana. Smooth peanut butter on top, light banana creme on the inside and a sprinkling of peanuts on top.
Not too much of a banana flavor which I thought was good. I might make the peanut butter topping a little more creamy like a buttercream, but hey that’s just me and that’s just because I love the filling on my chocolate peanut butter whoopie pies. Speaking of chocolate, Geoff said chocolate would be a great flavor addition to this guy.
Next up is the Samoa. The clear winner for us, it was a chocolate glazed donut drizzled with caramel and topped off with a sprinkling of coconut.
I was very excited because samoas used to be my favorite Girl Scout cookies growing up and this donut definitely rose to the occasion.
Last we threw in the Strawberry Cheesecake for good measure. Who doesn’t like a good cream cheese frosting? I certainly loved it. The donut, chocolate with strawberry filling, however was underwhelming. I ended up just licking the icing off the top and discarding the bottom.
I’m much more of a bagel girl when it comes to breakfast splurges but I can’t resist a specialty donut every now and again. Especially if I hear they are famous.
Cat missed the memo about getting up early and we found her like this when we got home.
Always such a lady.
But not so thrilled with the paparazzi wake up call.
