First stop was The Singing Oak. Just to give you an idea of scale, look at the size of that wind chime compared to me. I’m 5’4″. It amazed me that we couldn’t hardly hear the chimes until we were in close range of the tree. You’d think those monster chimes would ring out across the entire park. I’ve honestly walked the path right past this tree before without even noticing it!
After relaxing under the tree and enjoying the music, we headed off on the path towards the boat and bike rental house. Not before stopping to smell the flowers though.
We had planned to rent a boat but now it was not only dry out, it was downright hot. We opted for a covered Surrey. Rental prices were very reasonable, you can check them all here.
Yuko is a New York City native and does not drive so I think the power of the steering wheel went straight to her head. I felt a bit like a character on Mario Kart, weaving in and out of our lane and dodging people. My memory may be a tad more dramatic than the real experience but I can assure you she will not be operating any heavy machinery in the near future.
We quickly whipped around Big Lake and realized we didn’t know how to get to the other paths. When we asked for a map, the guy who had helped us with the rentals offered to switch us into another Surrey with a map between the steering wheels (yeah there were two and I was sad to discover the one on the right was a decoy when Yuko was driving…). So tip for anyone who plans to do this: ask for a Surrey with a map from the get go.
Our rental was good for one hour and at the end of that hour we took a moment to explore their dock. This place really has anything you could imagine for a fun day in the park.
That building to my left is the New Orleans Museum of Art. If the weather hadn’t cleared up, we would have just gone in there. They also have a great sculpture garden and are hosting a series of Alice in Wonderland events this month that I can’t wait to check out!
As the afternoon headed to a close, we walked back toward the park entrance but couldn’t resist sitting under the Singing Oak one last time.
This is just one part of a fun-filled weekend staycation. You can find my full staycation itinerary here!
