Hidden behind a side entrance of the Cais do Sodré train station you will find a wide staircase leading you up to the Sunset Destination Hostel. All of the Destination Hostels offer excellent service and a social experience, but while the Lisbon Destination Hostel is grand and modern and the Alfama location fits right into its traditional neighborhood, the Sunset Destination Hostel is laid back and casual.
After checking in I was lead down a long hallway, through doorway after doorway, around a great balcony hall overlooking the train station below and finally to my room. A four bed mixed dorm. I quickly set down my things and headed back toward the main room.
The hostel is fully equipped with a kitchen and dining room. Once a week they host a vegetarian dinner for guests. But even more exciting is what you’ll find if you keep walking past the dining room and head out on the roof. A large tented pavilion makes for the perfect hangout spot, and just beyond it you’ll find a bar that serves all sorts of drinks including a refreshing mint lemonade.
Across from the tent is the urban garden, growing herbs and small produce. Guests can help themselves.
And at the very edge of the roof you will find the rooftop pool overlooking that Tagus river. Perfect for dipping your feet into after a long bike tour or floating around in as the sun sets. I spent nearly all of my time at the hostel on the rooftop enjoying the views.
