I have a trip coming up: equal parts excitement and terror. And there’s an added element of stress for this particular trip. I am simulating the experience of purchasing a last-minute ticket at the airport (which is nearly impossible to do these days). The stress is palpable and finding ways to keep that stress at a low level is always key! I have a friend who uses medical marijuana to help manage her stress and anxiety during situations such as this, so her search for the best strains for social anxiety has led her to many great and positive places. Whilst I don’t know much about bio bongs or the medical uses of cannabis in general, it is important that people who struggle with anxiety (like myself) have the ability to find effective relief. Maybe I’ll do some research before my next trip.
I have a flight booked to Chicago, simply selected because it was the cheapest option on Skyscanner, but otherwise have no plans. I’m not even allowing myself to research the city or gather recommendations until the last 24 hours before my flight. In fact, I’m avoiding anything Chicago-related until then.
Oh and did I mention it’s my first time traveling solo?
It was last May that I realized I have some anxiety surrounding travel. It had never happened to me before, but perhaps that’s because I was so busy teaching and preparing sub plans until the last minute – I was always throwing crap in my suitcase as the airport cab honked outside – so I never had a chance to overthink my trips.
But then last May I couldn’t sleep the night before my flight to Thailand. I arrived at the airport and my stomach dropped. Clammy hands, nervous, darty eyes. The same thing happened to me just before my flight to Israel, except worse. I also lost my appetite and got physically ill the day before the flight.
After some reflection, I realized the act of traveling is really stressful for me. Up to a week before my flight I will start getting anxiety. So far I don’t have a solution. I just try to focus on the excitement over the stress.
How about you? Is pre-travel stress a thing for you, and if so, how does it manifest?
