Jenna and I spent our third day walking around the city. We saw a lot so this post is mostly pictures. Enjoy!
Marienplatz, check! We got to Marienplatz shortly before 11 a.m. Marienplatz is the location for Neues Rathuas and Altes Rathaus, the new and old town halls. The Neues Rathaus has a giant cuckoo clock tower (see below) that chimes at 11 a.m., 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. To say it chimes is a huge understatement. On those hours, the clock tower’s 42 bells play a concert during which the little copper figures perform a dance and act out a jousting tournament.
Fresh market lunch, check! We grabbed lunch at Viktualienmarkt, a huge, outdoor fresh market. We discovered Obazda, a traditional Bavarian cheese spread, and Jenna got a GIANT meat-wich that was recommended. Jenna said it just tasted like “a whole lot of meat.”
{According to the cashier this thing is “real.” Jenna’s now sleeping with one eye open.} |
Souvenirs, check! After lunch, we went in search of some souvenirs. Jenna got a cuckoo clock (it better not go in the closet haha!) for her dad among a bunch of other cute things. This one woman convinced me to buy a Stein (traditional Bavarian beer mug) because her husband (“a real McCoy” according to her) would drink out of it. The people here always want to help. I love it.
More Sightseeing, check! After Marienplatz, we visited Olympiapark and the BMW museum. Both were cool but a bit overrated… atleast for the hike we made in the ice-cold wind. We also stopped by the English Garden where we walked to a hilltop pavilion (picture above) that provided us with a view of Munich’s skyline. The English Garden is also home to Chinesischer Turm, Munich’s “finest beer garden.” Apparently it’s not so popular in the winter…
We ended the day with pizza and pasta for dinner (sorry Bavaria but we needed a break from your food) and Radler’s at Hofbrauhaus! I loved the Radlers (half beer/half lemonade). You probably know that I was excited to try these from how much I mentioned Radlers in my pre-Munich posts and they lived up to my expectations :).
Guten tag! xoxo.
