New Orleans has a mild winter climate during Mardi Gras. On some days I’ve gone out in fleece lined leggings, a chunky sweater and a jacket while other days I’ve been caught in a crop top and shorts. Some days the sun is shining and the next it’s pouring down rain. The moral of the story is that to pack well for Mardi Gras in New Orleans, you’re going to need to pack functional layers and a few weather-conscious essentials. After you’ve got these items squished into the bottom of your bag, toss in as many costume pieces as you can fit before zipping it up.
When it comes to actually picking out your outfits, the best news is that you can honestly wear whatever you want during Mardi Gras. Some people roll out to the parades wearing jeans and a t-shirt while others show up dressed to the nines in costumes they’ve been planning for months. There’s also everything in between. Don’t believe me, just look at my previous posts from Mardi Gras’ past.
Want to take a peak inside my bag? Here’s what I’m bring for Mardi Gras 2015.
{THURSDAY} FOR THE PLANE
I like to stick with a cute but comfy travel outfit including leggings, a sweater, boots, jacket + essentials and minimal accessories.
{THURSDAY} QUARTER + UPTOWN PARADES
My absolute favorite evening of parades because the Muses through glitter heels from their floats and the themes are always beautiful. We will also get in some day time wandering in the French Quarter so this outfit needs to be comfortable and layered. I’ll stick to the basics from my travel outfit but switch to a graphic tank, jacket and my hayband for some Mardi Gras fun.
{FRIDAY} GARDEN DISTRICT + PARADES
I’m going to keep it simple during the day with jeans and a tee or sweatshirt if it’s cold. For the parades I’ll throw on a wig and fun headband or hat at night and keep it festive with a purple sweater.
{SATURDAY} ALL DAY PARADES
Saturday is when we’ll get really crazy, spending the whole day in costume as we make our way to the quarter for Endymion. Think gold lame, loud prints, neon colors, fanny packs.
Here’s a printable (and pin-able) packing list:
Need help shopping for all those fun accessories? I’ve got you covered. But don’t forget to pick a reliable pair of shoes first. I’ve also included a few essentials you should never forget!
Laissez les bon temps rouler!
