If you live north of DC in Montgomery County, or happen to be passing through for a few days, Great Falls is an excellent area for a summer hike. Beginner’s or casual strollers can meander along the tow path, but we were looking for more of an adventure so we opted to climb through the Billy Goat Trail.
After a couple of miles, we took a break and sat on the cliffs looking across the river to Virginia. We found the perfect overhang, a spot that is pretty well known by daring cliff jumpers, to sit and chat.
Along the way back from Great Falls, on Seven Locks, we visited Roger’s produce stand to pick up fresh cherries, tangerines, peppers and tomatoes. They made for the perfect snack after our hike, and the two brothers who run the business couldn’t be more friendly. Definitely worth a stop.
